Welcome Message from Vice-Chancellor

UCSI University and QS Asia are delighted to welcome you to the inaugural QS Subject Focus Summit on Hospitality and Tourism – a discipline and an industry that cannot be downplayed in an era of unprecedented connectivity.

As an industry, the hospitality and tourism sector’s growth has outstripped the global economy for six straight years. It generates $7.6 trillion worldwide, amounts to around 10% of global GDP and generates 1 in 10 of the world’s jobs. According to World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) data, tourist arrivals grew by 4.3% in 2016 to 1.235 billion and 300 million more tourists travelled internationally between 2008 to 2016. UNWTO forecasts that international tourist arrivals will reach 1.8 billion by 2030.

This Summit presents an ideal platform to address the deeper realities of the sector’s economic, environmental and social dimensions. For starters, Hospitality’s continuous growth must be matched by improvements in quality education and skilled training. More insights are needed to outline its influence on other economic sectors and its impact on poverty levels. Delving deeper, best practices must also be shared to ensure the sector grows hand-in-hand with sustainable consumption and production, biodiversity conservation and environment protection.

By bringing together prominent thinkers, academics, practitioners and policy makers in Hospitality, this Summit sets the stage for a dynamic meeting of minds. Case studies detailing how education can spur further growth in the sector will be showcased. Intense but convivial debate will be generated. More importantly, avenues for collaboration will be created.

Join us as we come up with shared initiatives that will take a multi-trillion-dollar sector forward. I personally look forward to welcoming you in Kuching, the quintessential Hospitality hub of East Malaysia.
